Shigisan Shinka School of Ikebana

Suika Katsumura who also served as the first president established this ikebana school in 1953. On July 1, 1990 Rika Matsui became its fourth president. There are no titles in this school such as “Iemoto” or “Headmaster”, but each year an archbishop from three temples supervises the school. The Shigisan Shinka school falls into two categories: The “Classic Style” and “Freestyle” forms. These strive to bring forth the beauty of flowers in fresh and new ways. They are continuously trying to bring new life to this art form.

In the “Freestyle Form”, there is a particular regard for shapes and form and attention is given especially to the type of flower, container use, color and space. As the artist feels his work taking shape, natural understanding of beauty emerges and greater life is brought to bear on the final outcome of a work.
